Boot Care 101..A Boot Care Seminar

COWHIDE

Care for Cowhide Boots:

Remove loose dirt or dust with brush or rag.
Clean thoroughly with leather conditioner, leather balm or leather dressing.
Apply thin coat of matching color shoe cream, then brush cream into leather and buff with a soft cloth until luster is obtained. For a high luster, apply a thin coat of wax polish, neutral paste on light colors, matching polish on dark colors.
Brush and buff again.


Other names for Cowhide Leathers:

BRAHMA used for Work or Casual boots
Usually from bull shoulders 9 to 10 oz thick
Extra thick with bigger grain than shoulder Shines well! Flesh side shrinks faster than outside because of thickness of the hide. This creates the big bubbly grain that gives this leather a look very similar to elephant.
Care: Same as Cowhide


BULLHIDE used for Work or Casual boots

Thick with distinct grain. Shines well! This is generally a shoulder portion. Flesh side shrinks faster than outside which adds to grain effect.
Care: Same as Cowhide


COW used for Casual boots
Cattle. Dark and light markings that resemble tye-dye patterns. The top portion of leather is removed from underlying layers for lighter weight Leather is twisted to form creases, while it is twisted, dye is run through giving it tye-dye look.
Care: Same as Cowhide


KIDSKIN used for Dress boots
Young goats. Soft, Elastic, sturdy, supple and lightweight! Takes a high shine Grain allows greater variety of colors, highlights
Care: Same as Cowhide but cannot take abuse


SHRUNKEN SHOULDER used for Work or Casual boots
Cowhide Shoulder. Thick cowhide, wrinkled look Twisted and hand wrung for wrinkled look Shrinks along creases made when wrung.
Care: Same as Cowhide


NAKED FINISH LEATHERS
OL' BUCK/DEER TANNED/HORSE TANNED

Care for Naked Finish Leathers:
Remove loose dirt or dust with soft brush or rag
Clean with soft brush
Use leather balm conditioner
Do not use wax free conditioners as the leather may become discolored or blotchy
New Boots should be treated with 2 coats of Kiwi© Water & Stain Protector and allow to dry between coats for maximum protection

OL' BUCK used for Casual boots
Deertanned Cowhide. Supple, soft and comfort-type leather. Natural top grain of leather may show natural scars and blemishes Leather has a Matte Finish

OIL and WAX IMPREGNATED LEATHERS

Care for Oil and Wax Impregnated Leathers:

Remove loose Dirt with brush or rag
Replenish oils with an Apache Cream


Other names for Oil or Wax Impregnated Leathers:

Bay Apache or Crazy Horse for Casual Boots
Cowhide. Tough, Durable weathered worn look. Stuffed oil or wax tannage with variation of tone due to extreme pullup Oil tanned then hot stuffed with more oil. This is a water repellent leather that's easy to care for.

Care: Same as Oil Impregnated Leathers


Oiled Bullhide for Casual or Work Boots
Mature cattle. Buffed bullhide with oil finish. Generally shoulder portion with small grain Soft, Durable leather with distinctive grain.

Care: Same as Oil Impregnated Leathers


Oiled Toro for Casual or Work Boots
Cowhide. Buffed and oiled heavy grain with a bullhide grain print. Lightly sanded then oiled.

Care: Same as Oil Impregnated Leathers


Oily Ranch for Casual or Work Boots
Pigskin. Soft Supple hand Lightweight Dark & light markings create tie-dye pattern. The pigskin hides have been buffed then oiled. Crunch process with oil topcoat creates highs & lows.

Care: Same as Oil Impregnated Leathers

Retan for Casual or Work Boots
Cowhide. Conforms well to foot Thick Extra Flexible & tanned twice (retanned). Tanning step 1 is a chrome tan, then the leather is chrome tanned with oil. The double tanning means leather will resist barnyard acids and won't dry out easily.

Care: Same as Oil Impregnated Leathers


Taurus for Casual Boots
Cowhide. Wrinkled, shrunken look with Ol' Buck, oiled look Shoulder portion from older cows Twisted and hand wrung for appearance then shrunken into creases Has some oil and waxes in tannage and finishing to give casual used look.

Care: Same as Oil Impregnated Leathers


SUEDE FINISHED LEATHERS

CARE:

New boots should be treated with 2 coats Kiwi® water and stain protector.
Allow to dry between applications
Keep free of mud and drying elements
Clean with nylon brush
On snuffed grain use a fine abrasive paper lightly on the areas that are already snuffed

Other names for Suede Finished Leathers:


Napa Casual
Cowhide. Comfortable. This leather is not a true suede. The top layer of this leather has been removed giving it the fuzziness of suede rather than the smoothness of cowhide.
Care: Same as Suede/Snuffed Finished Leathers.


Shadow Nubuck Casual Dress
Cowhide. Lightweight, soft leather with antique effect. The cowhide is buffed to a soft finish with low nap. It is antiqued with darker topcoat for surface interest.
Care: Same as Suede/Snuffed Finished Leathers.



Sueded Shrunken Shoulder Casual
Cowhide. Looks exotic due to its unique distinct grain. Unlike other suedes, this leather isn't easily stained by water. It is made from thick shoulder leather. Yet is lighter weight than regular shrunken shoulder which gives it a tighter grain. The top grain is lightly sanded to give it a soft, sueded look while wrinkles retain the original finish.
Care: Same as Suede/Snuffed Finished Leathers.


EXOTICS - REPTILES AND MAMMALS

CARE

Remove loose dirt or dust with brush or rag
Apply Reptile Conditioner with soft cloth
Let dry then buff with soft cloth
Apply thin coats of the reptile conditioner often


Other names for Reptile and Mammal Leathers:

Hornback Alligator Dress
Softer than normal finish deep luster. Made from farm raised alligators and cut from the belly skin. Distinct pattern comes from the alligator's backside. Tanned using extra oils to create more supple softer finish then polished in factory to give it deep sheen

Caiman Dress
Reptile leather that has a deep luster and softer than most exotics. From Caiman (alligator cousin) and are farm raised. Tanned in matte/soft finish for extra comfort. Avoid any soap or alcohol based product which will dry out leather. Waxes and polishes work well.
Care: Same as Exotics - Reptiles and Mammals


Lizard Dress
Like any reptile skin, it is non elastic so it must be fitted more exactly to the foot. Teju lizard from Argentina are used for the backcut lizard boots. Boots with belly scales will have a larger and more distinct skin. A "Egg white" protein and glaze at the factory give these boots their shine and rich color.

Brush Off Ostrich Dress
All the advantages of Ostrich with a dressier shiner look. Birds are african farm raised. Boots will have a deep base color with a black over dye hand brushed overcoat to enhance the dressy look Use clear polish if needed.

Ostrich Dress
Unique grain especially full quill. Very strong & versatile. The skin is soft and conforms well to foot. Ostrich skin is luxurious on your feet. The birds are African farm raised. While ostrich does not need special attention it cannot be neglected.

Shark Dress or Casual
Extremely tough and durable Rich colors. May be slightly stiffer and harder to break in so fit should be more exact. Skin has water shedding properties but is not waterproof. A variety of species are used for leather. The skin is plated for consistency and will be glazed as finishing step. Needs extra oils and conditioners to maintain softness and flexibility. Add extra oil around edge where sole is sewn to foot. This leather will split and tear if allowed to dry out.

EXOTICS - SNAKES

CARE

Remove loose dirt or dust with brush or rag.
Wipe against the scales in order to remove dust & dirt then wipe with the grain of the scales
Apply Reptile Conditioner with soft cloth with the grain of scales
Rub or buff with a soft cloth until luster is obtained
Apply thin coats of reptile conditioner often
Yellowing of natural color snakeskin is a by-product of exposure to the sun and the age of boots and can not be reversed by cleaning products.
Other names for Snake Skin Leathers:

Matte Python Dress and Casual
Same unique markings as glazed python but stuffed with oil or wax for a softer hand. Some colors are bleached first to take out the markings. Matte finish give skin supple glove feel.
Care: Same as Naked Finish Leathers


Python Snake Dress
Unique markings and scales. Subspecies of python from Asia. Typically, used with natural markings. Subspecies with faint markings are bleached back or bellycut. Unavailable for Sale in California
Care: Same as Exotics - Snakes


Rattlesnake Dress
Attention getting! The naturally rough Western Rattlesnake has a smaller diamond pattern than it's Eastern cousin. Eastern Rattlesnake has the larger distinctive pattern. Western Rattlesnake is not available for sale in California.

Viper Snake Dress Casual
Distinct markings with smaller and thinner scales than Python. These small snakes are from Asia. They are bellycut which leave the markings in middle of skins.
Care: Same as Exotics - Snakes
